The Carpathians comprise one of the largest naturally preserved forest landscapes in Europe. Home to one third of all European plant species, they are are also called the “Amazon of Europe” by ecologists. However, the Carpathians, with their rich biodiversity, have been threatened by uncontrolled deforestation for years. To help to protect this unique and biodiverse landscape, Nicoleta Carpineanu, who grew up in these forests, founded the non-profit advocacy group Forest Without Frontiers in 2019. Nicoleta is a DJ and producer and supports the non-profit through her own work and her strong network of musicians and artists, as well as donations from the public and businesses who want to plant trees and help to rewild damaged landscapes. The goal: to have planted one million trees by 2025. So far, Forest Without Frontiers has already planted 40,000 native mixed-species trees over 10 hectares of degraded land in the Carpathian mountains, where natural reforestation does not easily occur, and have access to many more hectares of protected land. The plantations buffer and extend existing natural forests and help to create wildlife corridors for species such as wolves, bears and lynx. The initiative finances the plantings and materials, always employing people from the local community for growing and planting the trees. With only 3 € you can help and finance the planting of a tree!
