Peat-swamp rainforests store vast amounts of CO2 and thus provide a natural contribution to climate stabilisation. The last of these forests can be found in the beautiful 580,000 ha Sebangau National Park, in the south of Borneo, the 3rd largest island in the world. Sebangau National Park preserves unique flora and fauna, is home to indigenous peoples, and is considered a refuge for the largest remaining, protected orang-utan population on earth. The anthropogenic draining of the peat-swamp forest due to illegal logging and the impacts of the former "Mega Rice Project" were just a few of the many accelerators contributing to the loss of 21,000 sq. km. of forest in 2015. Borneo Nature Foundation is a not-for-profit conservation and research organisation working to protect and restore this vital ecosystem, for the wildlife, indigenous communities, and global climate. Within the next 5 years, 1 million trees will be grown, planted, monitored and protected in the Sebangau National Park to restore the habitat of many wild animals, reduce soil erosion, prevent future forest fires, and relieve the Earth's lungs. This strongly community-led initiative allows local people to take ownership over the project, gain additional income and motivates them to protect their trees. With a donation you not only leave a green fingerprint, you also support the Borneo Nature Foundation in the realization of this important project. It's as simple as that.
