Although Thailand has experienced rapid economic and social growth over the past 4 decades including tremendous achievements in poverty alleviation, the country of 68 million people still faces major problems in dealing with the large number of refugees it has received. Of the approximately 92,000 refugees distributed among 9 camps, 60% live in the northwestern topographically mountainous and rugged Tak region. Most of the residents belong to ethnic minorities, such as the Karen, Karenni and Kayah peoples, and have escaped violence from the conflict between the military and armed groups in Myanmar. Thailand claims that the camps are safe, but by imposing curfews and refusing to issue work permits it nonetheless condemns the residents to a restricted and idle life. The main victims of this situation are the children. They are exposed to chronic malnutrition and daily violence, while subjected to the poor living conditions of the surrounding area. The British aid organization "Children of the Mekong" addresses the urgent by responding to the high risk of abuse and denial of these children's basic needs. In collaboration with the Caritas Thailand "COERR", available resources are used to stop the widespread abuse of children. Knowledgeable personnel will identify qualified families within the community to take the children into their protective care. Your donation will help support these families and bring a smile to a child's face.
