Food support for addicted ethnic minorities

Food to aid the healing

In many parts of the world, including Germany and Europe, there are laws protecting against discrimination. Therefore, it is often hard for us to understand that people elsewhere are persecuted or even murdered because of their ethnic background. Unfortunately, this is the reality for the Karen people, who have suffered decades of atrocities under the Burmese military dictatorship, forcing them to flee their homes. Around 50,000 of them now live in the Mae La refugee camp in Thailand's Tak province, near the Myanmar border. Life outside the camp is rarely tolerated by the Thai government. The lack of prospects and daily frustrations drive many into addiction. Alcohol and methamphetamines are destroying families and communities within the camp. Our partner, the DARE Network, is the only support available on the ground to combat this crisis. The Treatment Center employs traditional Burmese medicine to conduct long-term detoxification processes with skilled personnel. With a success rate of 60%, DARE far exceeds the average. We have completed this project by providing food supplies to the "clients" and local staff for one year, as we believe in the importance of this work and do not want the persecution of the Karen people to be forgotten. Please read Sebastian's travel report to get a deeper sense of what it is like ...
