How can waste and leftover biomass be recycled sustainably? An answer to this question was found by Project Sisterhouse e.V., which we came across in Côte d'Ivoire. Côte d'Ivoire is one of the largest cocao producing countries in the world. However, during cocao cultivation so many cocao pod husks accumulate on the grounds of the plantations and this can lead to serious problems with water absorption in the soil. Project Sisterhouse e.V. has found a solution in which a new product can be made from leftover cacao pod husks: Plant based charcoal. In a pyrolysis furnace the cocao pod husks are reduced to half their volume and can then be used as fuel, fertilizer or as a feed supplement for cattle.
